We are thrilled to unveil our latest project and feature in Rue Magazine. It has been a privilege to reimagine this historic Berkeley home, bringing warmth and functionality into the expansive space while honoring the original architecture. Constructed in 1924 by the renowned architect Willis Polk, a contemporary of Julia Morgan, this landmarked home was originally commissioned for Duncan McDuffie, a conservationist, mountaineer, and real estate developer. Today, it stands as a testament to an era of grandeur and elegance.

The living room is the true crown jewel of this property. It dominates the first floor with soaring patterned ceilings, exposed beams, and ornate carved details. To address the vastness of the space, we commissioned large custom pieces of furniture to anchor the room without overwhelming it.

We meticulously curated each and every accessory, artwork, and piece of furniture to strike a deliberate symmetry and harmony with the architectural language of the space. No detail was left untouched.

Artworks by San Francisco based artist Roni Feldman flank either side of the fireplace. These pieces shimmer and change with the light streaming in from the garden, reflecting the conditions of each day. These pieces represent the ethos of the project as a whole: never to cover or obscure, but only to complement and to emphasize.

One of the original built-in bookcases that flank the room’s four corners is completed with a chaise lounge, marble side table and arc floor lamp to create a cozy reading nook. A warm, neutral palette and lushly textured fabrics were selected throughout to evoke California contemporary style and to create an atmosphere of tranquility.

A commissioned piece by San Francisco based artist Windy Chien hangs above the grand staircase in the entry, while an antique Syrian wedding chest sits on the main level. These elements seamlessly intertwine with the stunning original columns and wrought iron balustrade. This project is a celebration of history, an ode to timeless design, and a thoughtful adaptation to the needs of a modern family.
